We Will Continue With Your Regular Programming...

I must apologize for the radio silence lately! I've been a busy bee getting all my costumes finished for Dragon Con 2016, and it's just a few weeks away.
Things will remain a bit quiet around here until about a week after Labor Day, as my schedule is chock full of events! Unfortunately none of these are mermaid-related, but no less fun ;) Stay tuned, and I'll see you in September.
XOXO!

Dreams Really Can Come True

Well folks, it looks like my dream mermaid tail is within sight!
Over the last few years I've been saving my pennies, and thanks to a little boost from friends and family via Go Fund Me, I was able to save up enough to finally take the dive!

I received a reply about two weeks after sending my 'Ready To Order' email to Bryn and Abby at Finfolk Productions. I paid the deposit, and have begun filling out all the info needed to start my tail.
I understandably have a long wait ahead of me, and that's ok. The twins are loaded with orders, but their work is absolutely stellar and well worth the wait!
I have not yet gotten my production month yet, but most likely my wait will be over a year, and I still need to send them my measurements.
That kind of wait time is pretty typical in these cases though, and I'll be attempting to distract myself with my own fabric, sequin & neoprene tail making projects in the meantime.

Progress on the t-shirt making front with the new logo is moving slowly, but moving!
I've narrowed the companies I'd like to have make them down to two, but it needs to wait until after Silicon Valley Comic Con this weekend. With tons of last minute sewing to finish up, work, and house guests coming in, there hasn't been much time for anything else.
Funds made from the sales of these t-shirts will be added to the Viking ship prop fund, and the building will commence this summer.

A Logo In The Making

Sorry for the radio silence lately!
Back in the saddle with the creation of my 'Mersona' and brand, for lack of a better term, I've been a busy little fish! Finally getting to order my dream mermaid tail is about to become a reality.
I'm planning Freyja The Viking Mermaid t-shirts, and even completed a final draft of a logo that will be featured on t-shirts and hopefully other merchandise. It would be fun to have patches and stickers etc. with my logo design.

After I finished the final concept sketch for my logo, I put it through Photoshop to clean it up a bit.
Just for fun I ended up playing with filters, and created this carved-in-stone look, similar to carvings on the runestones scattered around Scandinavia.
I wanted something pretty and full of fantasy, but still very Viking, and representative of the culture and ancient carvings. This is preferred over the a 'modern tribal' versions of Viking knot-work designs I see everywhere.
I'm hoping to refine my pencil sketch by creating a vector from it, to make a final logo for print.
The watermark will not be part of the final design, and I plan on cleaning up her trident a bit, too.

Saving up for a Finfolk Productions silicone mermaid tail has gone better than I expected. Thanks to the help of a few friends donations, my frugal saving (as best I could) and a nice tax refund this year, I have more than enough for a down payment to at least get in line for a tail, made by the lovely Bryn and Abbey.
There are a few things I need to do before I jump in that lagoon, however; like loose the proof of my holiday sins. This year was particularly epic with the good food and drink with amazing people.
It's not much, a matter of barely an inch around my waist, hips and butt. With that said, being someone who sews a lot and makes her own clothing, it does matter if I'm going to be taking detailed measurements for a swimmable silicone mermaid tail that needs to comfortably fit like a glove! So, in another few weeks, I'll be back down to my 'fighting weight' and will go for it.
XOXO!

Current Events

I've had to hit the reset button, for lack of a better term, and get back in the water.
Travel, some needed vacation time and performances have taken up a huge chunk of time over the last two months. While enjoyable, it kept me out of my fins far too long.
Saving for the Viking shipwreck prop, and my silicone tail, is going well. That's in addition to the kind donations from friends, and I'm literally halfway to my dream mermaid tail.
www.gofundme.com/thevikingmermaid

In other news, designs are being finalized for my soon-to-be launched clothing label,
Ritzy Raven this spring or summer. Released as very limited runs (to start), single items or micro collections of 3 to 4 pieces will be launched for pre-order each season, or twice a year. The core style of RR is inspired by the Art Deco period between the 1930s and 1940s, and sometimes with a fusion of timeless styles from many eras.
I'm hoping that with enough success in starting out small, I'll be able to grow the business into a somewhat larger model, and have larger collections released seasonally. Hopefully, I can begin producing and manufacturing the clothing in the US. For now, I have a trusted and ethically run resource overseas that actively uses their business model in textiles and clothing construction, to directly benefit and grow their own community.

So that's the gist of my world for now. I'm looking forward to a mermaid meet up tomorrow at the SJSU pool, too. I've been having swimming withdrawals!

The 'Tail' Of The Mermaid Cove - Funding Campaign

Here it is folks; the crowdfunding campaign for my Viking Mermaid project, and a future mermaid cove event attraction.
Since I've been adding to my own 'cookie jar' and saving up funds for this project, I still want to try the crowdfunding route as an addition to my own savings. I have more content to add, and will be posting more details, images, designs and video to the campaign page soon.

http://www.gofundme.com/thevikingmermaid

While I still feel like I'm stepping out on a limb here, there is nothing wrong with exploring different options when trying to save and raise funds for anything.
Having my own reservations about crowdfunding in general, and after hearing many people speak negatively about it, it was not an easy decision for me to create this campaign.
I know other artists and performers th
at didn't go this route for similar things, and understandably have issues with crowdfunding of this sort.
All I can do is continue to stay positive, save my own money to the cookie jar, and get the ball rolling.

Any amount helps, especially if you just want to be a cheerleader from the sidelines :) so thank you in advance for your support.
XOXO!

A Deep Breath

Today I discovered that my breath hold while swiming underwater has gotten longer.
A good 10 seconds longer, and even if that doesn't seem like much, it is when you are propelling your body under the water for any extended amount of time.

While my current breath hold time is nothing to get excited over, today I realized that when I focused on something other than how long I had before I needed to surface, I was able to relax. The jittery feeling in my diaphragm melted away. I ignored the little bit of water filling my nose; it wasn't going much further than that. When I was a kid, this just came naturally, but I've found that getting back into that mindset as an adult is really interesting. Challenging would be a better term.
There are, I'm sure, so many psychological barriers that weigh on us as adults, that just weren't there during childhood. The daily grind of adult responsibility can trigger all kinds of stress, even if it's not outright noticeable. We stash the little stresses away like old receipts, that for some reason we don't just throw in the trash. These little shreds, impacted by larger ones, accumulate like paper-mâché, and it gets harder to shake them off with each passing year.

The one thing I can say that initially distracted me today, were the tiles on the bottom of the pool. One long dark glazed line extended beneath me. I simply focused on my surroundings and less on an actual speed I was trying to travel at. The almost-panic knot in my chest loosened even more.

It really comes down to relearning how to enjoy spending time underwater. I always have; diving down as much as possible for that feeling of weightlessness. But learning how to leave my day floating on the surface, or sitting on the side of the pool, while I frolic beneath is a little journey of discovery in itself.

A Quick Clip & Waterproof Makeup Review

While it's not much to look at, yesterday Anders and I were able to get some quick footage during an afternoon swim in my tail.

Hopefully we can splice more of the footage we caught later, too. Sorry for the blurriness, the iPhone (enclosed in an underwater case) kept trying to focus on the bubbles instead of me.
I was having some uh...technical difficulties with my bikini top; each time I dove down from the surface, or simply swam forward underwater, it would pull down and expose more than I'd like to at a public pool, hah!
So, even after I tightened up the halter strap, this still kept me from doing much of the underwater tricks and lengthy submerged swimming I wanted to capture on video. Especially if I'm going to be sharing it online.

Regardless, this was also a good test for some of my waterproof makeup!
I need to find a better waterproof concealer, but the eyeshadow and lipcolor stayed intact.
My brow pencil wasn't waterproof, so it bit the dust pretty early on.
The mascara was supposed to be waterproof, but it also evaporated as I suspected it would. I'm hoping to track down some of Urban Decay's 'Cannonball' waterproof mascara. I've heard rave reviews from other mermaids about this one.
The waterproof eyeliner by Rimmel stayed put.
Maybelline's 24 Hour Color Tattoo cream shadow also stayed put, and was easy to blend.
My lips were wearing Cover Girl's 'Outlast', recommended by Mermaid Iona; it's amazing. Completely comfortable compared to most lip colors like it, it even survived lunch and drinks at the Hukilau after our swim.

So stay tuned for more (better) footage. We may have access to a GoPro camera soon!

The Deco Darling With A Golden Tail

About 2 days before attending a local sci-fi fantasy convention, I had the urge to create a new look for my gold tail, and get photos.
So, armed with the scraps from the creation of the tail, I whipped up a 1940s style "sunbathing dress" inspired by ones I'd seen on Esther Williams and Betty Grable.
Lucky for me, the hotel that was hosting the convention had a really pretty pool, and my talented friend and fellow cosplay nerd, Mary Anne Butler had her camera at the ready.
More photos are on the way, but these are the teasers she's sent me so far:

Here's a link to a super quick snippet of video, of yours truly making new friends and inspiring a future mermaid.
 https://www.facebook.com/rj.johnson/videos/10205670893245140/

As you will witness in the clip, roles were reversed; this time the mermaid was tempted into the water from her sunny perch, by the adorable child. I wish the clip was longer, and could have caught the song this little girl was making up while hanging onto my shoulders, as I gave her a ride across the pool. I'm still not sure how I didn't just die from cute overload ;-D

In other news; I've entered a fun little contest with Mermaid Minerals to be Mermaid of the Month of May.
You can cast your vote for me by "Liking" my photo in this Facebook post.
Thanks!! XOXO

A Fork In The Road

The below has pretty much been my theme song for the last year or so.
It sums up how I'm feeling about life, the good and bad (mostly good), the new things, and what I choose to do with the old things. Especially the time given to me on this planet.

I'm currently trying to sort through what makes me happiest in life, and clearing away the clutter keeping me from realizing my dreams. Even if they aren't so crystal clear yet, I can at least see a light at the end of the tunnel.
The hard part is letting go of one I can't speak of yet, that was once a fun hobby for years(!).
I still love to do it, but even this is now at risk of simply being a habit and more difficult to do because of distance and time.
It stresses me out, because I feel the need to keep up with a 'scene', that according to others expectations, I'm supposed to be a part of *at all times*.
I like being part of a community and even a scene, but maybe I need something new?
And I'll say it out loud; mermaiding has given me this possibility.

~ 'Fountain' - Song by Iamamiwhoami ~

"What lies beyond the fringe of the woods?
Dust to dust so we leave for good
When all has gone to blazes I start to run
Until I find places where nobody's gone

No more weight on your conscience
With ease I go back to the start

Surge like a fountain, like tide

And swallow the bleed
Flows like a fountain inside

Gather force from the sea
Riding this giant wave untied
Let it wash me clean

Crawling through deafening cold
Turning head there's no sight of home
Though my body's aching
 we have to push on

For every stride a new line is drawn

Surge like a fountain, like tide

And swallow the bleed
Flows like a fountain inside

Gather force from the sea
Riding this giant wave untied
Let it wash me clean

From watching eyes
I blindly rove

To guard my stories
 and find new gold

Riding this giant wave untied
Let it wash me clean

What lies beyond the fringe of the woods?

Dust to dust so we leave for good"

An Eye-Opening Experience

Friday after work, I had an "OMGODS, YAAY!" moment.
It may be silly to get this excited over the following, but I couldn't help it.
For the first time since I was a little kid, I swam with my eyes open in a pool!
A chlorine pool, and it didn't hurt!! The last time I tried opening my eyes in a swimming pool, after only opening them in clean river water, the trauma from the pain caused me to never open them in swimming pools again. It's been goggles always since.
On a whim I decided to give this one a go, since I'd heard good things about how clean it is, but not stinky with chemicals.
After taking out my contact lenses and donning my glasses to safely make it from locker room to poolside, I shoved my feet into my monofin and dove right in.
After psyching myself up a little, I just stuck my face in the water and slowly opened my eyes, expecting the hellish sensation of chlorine molesting my sensitive eyeballs.
To my surprise there was no stinging, no burning! After so many years of goggles it felt weird to swim forward with them open, but I'll just need to get used to that again ;)

I'll still do some laps in the pool at my gym, but since this pool has a deep end, I may be here more often to do some real swimming and deep diving. Perhaps even organizing mermaid meet-ups if they are ok with a bunch of mermaids frolicking.
The other awesome thing is the hours are great when they aren't closed for swim meets and competitions, which is rare. They are open until 8pm Monday through Thursday, 6pm on Fridays and weekends until 3pm.

Thank you SJSU Aquatic Center, for your crystal clear water, friendly lifeguards, amazing filtration system, low chlorine, non-crowded, Olympic-sized pool with a very deep end. Go Spartans!

A New Year: Updates!

Although it's a bit late, Happy New Year!
I was finally able to claim my 'mersona' name, and it's official; I am now known as Mermaid Freyja, or Freyja The Viking Mermaid.
No website as of yet, but I plan on only having presence on Facebook and this journal.
So for now, here's the link to the Facebook Page:

https://www.facebook.com/freyjathemermaid

As you can see, there isn't a lot of actual mermaiding content yet. I am after all, just getting started and have lots of fun things planned for this summer. My wonderful fiance and hopeful mertender and I, have plans to explore the shores of Santa Cruz for cool photo spots.
I have also warned him of what it really means to be a mertender on any level. It's only if he truly wants to, because his job will be to heft me around now and then at events when I'm in my tail. The fabric tail will be no problem, and though he's a strong guy and I'm at an average 125-30 lbs soaking wet; once I get my silicone tail, that will add an extra 25 to 30 pounds.
While he won't be needing to carry me across great distances, it can still be quite the chore.

Speaking of silicone tails; my dream is to one day have a customized, more realistic silicone mermaid tail made by one of the amazingly talented tailmakers out there. Merbella Studios is at the top of my wishlist, and others such as Finfolk Productions and Mernation are possible contenders.
The price tag for these kinds of tails is in the low thousands due to the high level of skill, costly materials and labor it takes to make one.
As I save my pennies for one, I'm also considering the launch of a crowdfunding campaign to help cover a good chunk of the cost.
My reasoning for this, is that I'd love to take my entertainer experience and utilize it in a way I've never done before, that also brings attention to environmental conservation.

This isn't just about hobby swimming.
Adding my voice to oceanic wildlife conservation efforts is something I have always felt passionate about. Hanna Frasier has been a huge inspiration for me, with her world renowned conservation work, and as an accomplished mermaid.
Realistically, this also depends on what my day job will allow me the time and dedication for. I may not be out there with the crews, putting ourselves between Japanese whaling vessels and the whales any time soon. I can at least do my part to educate others about that, including other horrendous practices. The sickening annual dolphin slaughter at Taiji Cove in Japan is one I feel particularly angry, saddened and disgusted by.
There will come a day where I will be putting myself physically between the dolphins and the humans, but unfortunately right now is not that time. I'll admit this concept makes me feel a small grain of panic, on top of the sadness. Time is exactly what these creatures don't have on their side, and every week, month and year that goes by, so many more dolphins are lost.
On average 26,000 in just one annual Taiji slaughter. More recent stats show 36,000 per year total from the waters of Taiji, Iwate and Futo.
At least we have amazing people, such as those with The Sea Shepherd Cove Guard doing their part to thwart and report on the slaughter.

On a much lighter note; a themed photo setup at local Fantasy Faires, as well as private parties and events, is something I'd absolutely love to do. Adults and kids alike would have the opportunity to take a photo with a 'real live mermaid', and possibly receive a small gift from her treasure hoard.
I'm still on the fence about kids parties (more on that subject in a future blog entry). But for events like any of the above, it still requires me to be in closer proximity to both adults and children 90% of the time. A realistic looking mermaid tail has the highest visual and tactile impact.

Here are a few tropically-inspired examples of the jaw-dropping work that Raven creates, at Merbella Studios:

The Rosegold Mermaid Tail

Swimmable tail #1 was a success!
While a fabric version is not my dream tail, it is good for practice. I will say that metallic spandex looks amazing on the monofin when it's in the water.
And I have photos!

I finally had the chance to take the first swim, in my first swimmable fabric tail(!) with the Mahina monofin.
No video unfortunately. This is yet another reason I want a GoPro camera, so badly! During the entire swim I was wishing that I could get some underwater video of how the fin and fabric dorsal moved through the water. From what I could see myself, it looked really nice and fluid. Even the glitter on the fabric stayed intact and gave a little shimmer.

It felt exhilarating to swim so fast with the monofin. It was pretty comfortable once I had it on and moving through the water.
I'm not sure I'll need any swim socks with it; no foot cramps or bruises on my feet, as a few others have experienced with some monofin designs.
The gold spandex fabric did fairly well, but was a bit see-through when wet. No biggie, since I was wearing a full bikini with it. It was just the turquoise color of my bathing suit bottoms showing through as darker. My next homemade tail will likely be neoprene (except it likes to float) or made from darker fabric.

There was a little drag when swimming, as fabric tails will have in water, but thanks to the suggestion of a long-time friend and fellow mermaid, I left a good portion of the fluke open at the bottom edge. This way water can flow through the fluke and over the monofin instead of catching in it like a bubble. I know now that I want to add more of the pink ankle/dorsal fins to the back foot pocket area of the fluke.
Overall, it flowed pretty smoothly.
I can tell I need to brush up on my extended underwater swimming, and possibly grab some of those near-invisible nose plugs for a few more dives (which I know some other 'mers' use occasionally). At least until I can retrain myself to keep the water out of my nose, heh!

No green/blonde hair either, thanks to Ion Swimmer's shampoo, conditioner and leave-in conditioner spray. I didn't want to wear my swim cap, so I prepped my hair with this collection during the week leading up to this pool swim.
Speaking of which; the pool was fairly shallow, about 4 1/2 ft. at its deepest. So I did a few handstands, waving my fin at a few kids hanging out in the pool area.
I overheard one little girl say to her mom with urgency, "Mommy LOOK! ...I wanna be a mermaid, too", then *splish* my fluke would disappear below the surface just before mom would turn to look. This hilariously happened a few times, as my friend documented from the poolside.
I'd surface to hear this little girl insisting that "No, really she's a MERMAID, loook!"

My friend and I were swimming at a hotel pool near Disneyland this weekend. We were there to attend the Halloween costumed event, and she was the Anna to my Elsa. The entire time at Disneyland we had kids coming up to us asking if we were the "real Anna and Elsa?!" Our replies were similar as those used while in mermaid form around kids; "We are as real as you are, don't you think?". And they'd just nod and give us big smiles.
So, getting the opportunity as a mermaid, to continue little random moments of enchantment for some of the kids, was really heartwarming.

My Dream Fins: Color & Inspiration Collage

This is a mish-mash of themes, imagery and color that will serve as the basis for my Viking inspired mermaid tail. It will hopefully be done in silicone by one of my two favorite tail makers; Finfolk Productions or Merbella Studios. I'd also like to create a first 'draft' in neoprene over the chilly holidays using my Mahina monofin,  water-appropriate paint and other gilding in the above color pallet. I want to make this tail design mine as soon as possible!

Using one of the fun little online make-your-own mermaid doll games, I designed something that is close to how I want the colors and spotted pattern arranged on the tail itself. It's not the exact tail or fin shapes I want, but it's a good reference point. As you can see, it's inspired by fish of the related Norwegian salmon and rainbow trout family, complete with their cute freckles which I've always loved. The Norwegian salmon theme is played up in the platinum silvery colors and hints of gold.

Hehe...and I kind of want this phone case.

Down Memory Lane

Just a random post between the cleaning up of the sewing area, and the sewing of my tail.
Some of you that grew up in the 1980s may remember these lovely ladies; Sea-Wees!
http://ghostofthedoll.co.uk.34spreview.com/seawees-tropigals.htm

I had the TropiGals collection when I was about 5 years old. I remember seeing one with a girl at the park, and even though this was before Splash came out in theaters,  my obsession with mermaids had already taken hold.
My father had caught wind of this mermaid doll sighting. About a week later, I came home from Kindergarten to find all four of the mermaid sisters, sitting on my bed, nested with their companions in their little sponge lily pads.

I continued to collect the various versions they came out with along the years, and still wish they would re-release them. I still have mine, and while I don't have the sponges anymore, I think I have most of the corresponding babies and pets.

Testing: The Fabric Version

Over the last few days I was able to track down some great swim-worthy fabrics for a first mermaid tail. At least the first since I was about 10, heh! Only this time, the materials will be much better....and there's an actual swim fin in there.

I'm still drawn toward a coral pink & silver with a hint of blue green for my dream tail. But that won't happen until I save my money for a silicone tail.
For now, I was looking for fabrics that will flow and look great in the water, without fraying into a tangled mess and have the right kind of content to hold fit in water. I found an amazing metallic gold swim spandex for the main body of the tail and to cover the monofin.
Initially I had considered using an aqua or light turquoise to pair with the gold, for the fins (dorsal, pectoral, extra fluke fins, etc). When I had brought it home, I had inadvertently laid it next to a pink shirt I have, and the colors looked fantastic together. So, that had changed my mind toward this:

The soft pink material is that weird sheer spandex knit, with a dotted pattern in pink glitter.
Depending on your monitor settings, it may look hot pink but it's actually a softer bubblegum color.
I know the glitter will come off eventually, but like I said; this is just my first test tail and the fins I cut from it wont unravel horribly.
While the fabrics are of a really good quality, they were so discounted I'm really not all that concerned about real longevity. I think the final price for the fabric alone ended up around $30.
The basic look I'm going for is a serpentine/beta fish hybrid. Something that will create a flowing line in the water.
I want to get it done before I leave for Disneyland next Thursday evening, because our hotel has a pool I can test all this out in!

Sticks And Stones: Growing Up A Mermaid

Children are so often capable of a certain type of cruelty. It's a viciousness tinged with innocence. Like lion cubs teething, they begin the gnawing on each other.
As humans, we act out in a similar nature to organize a strange kind of pecking order.
Needless to say, I was picked on when I had so carelessly mentioned...that I was a mermaid.

It was 1987 and I was in 5th grade.
I was about 10 years old, when I'd let this morsel of thought slip out loud.
Already deemed an "odd kid" buy a few narrow-minded adults, I had a sharp philosophical streak and a tendency to wax poetic about life as I saw it, and how I felt as a person.
Other kids my age just didn't 'get it' and thought I was just weird.
Yet I'd get into deep discussions with teachers on life and the universe, my theories on how humans came to be on earth and the possibility of life in other galaxies. Like I said; I was an odd kid with a very scientific yet spiritual point of view. I was never, nor have I ever been of the crystal shard-wearing, tree-hugging hippie type, but man I could get pretty deep at times. Most of the time adults would just chalk that up to the lack of mental filter kids tend to exhibit. As you know, they just say whatever's on their mind.

Walking through the wooded area of the school playground with friends one afternoon, the discussion turned toward fantasy creatures and what our favorites were. What did we wish we could actually turn into if we had the power?
"a unicorn!" Melanie exclaimed.
"Well, I'd be a unicorn Pegasus", Kate countered.
"Mermaid", I said quietly over their innocent bickering over which was better. They stopped with their mouths still open.
"Yeah, I *am* a mermaid, actually." I said with sarcastic confidence as I chuckled to myself. I spent so much time in the water swimming, and it was that self awareness of what my 'spirit fantasy creature' was (for lack of a better term).
Later it would represent a sign of something deeper personally, as I grew into my sexual orientation as an adult and would identify as queer, and finally a lesbian. These girls wouldn't  have grasped this concept, especially not until adulthood. Hell, most adults don't and I can only hope they might have at some point in life.

So they guffawed at me, poked and prodded me with questions and comments. Then the insults and name-calling began. I tried to tell them my admitting to 'being a mermaid' wasn't meant as something literal. In my mind, there was deeper spiritual meaning of calling myself a mermaid, yet I had the bad habit of thinking out loud.
I swam all the time then. I was nearly born on the sea when my mother's water broke, while she was at the helm of a sailboat in the middle of Puget Sound.
I felt the pull of the ocean in my bones when I'd get too far from it (still do). Being out of the water for more than a month without a swim somewhere, felt unnatural to me.
The other kids my age thought I was a freak for calling myself a mermaid so confidently. But the worst part was when they began to use it as an insult. As if it were a filthy word.
"Mermaid!" they'd snarl at me during recess, in the lunch line, on the bus and in class. It had become their alternate word for 'Liar'.
It was too much for me to bear, and the taunting followed me all the way through middle school.

Either due to the regular harassment, teachers or counselors trying to tell me to "take is as a compliment", or changing tastes as I became a teen, my love of all things mermaid had begun to wain a bit.
Yet my love of the ocean did not, and a few years ago I discovered something that made it all come back.
There, via the internet, an entire community of people enjoying the hobby of  presenting as mermaids, mermen, or merfolk. These 'Mers' operate at varying levels, of course. There are the hobbyists and the entertainers, and some delve into oceanic conservation and have made major names for themselves as the face of the modern mermaid community. I've seen ages range from 15 to those in their 60s for the serious hobbyists, so far.

So I begin my journey back to the mermaid I've hidden away, and this picture is my way of giving the middle finger to all those who ever tried to make me doubt my dreams. This is for those who told me I can't, that it's weird or that I'm a freak and a liar.
Well guess what? My Mahina Merfin just arrived, no lie. Do I look like I'm doubting myself?
I didn't think so.

Growing Restless

Just a pretty picture from the 1920s to help fill the time here, until I have more content to offer.
I'm still waiting on my monofin, which should arrive on Saturday afternoon.
Then I can really begin practicing and sharing my progress here.
Truth be told, I don't need that much practice, at least not in learning how to swim with bound feet. Throughout my life, I've swam with my feet together using a dolphin kick 99% of the time. It still feels strange to me to kick against the water with each foot doing separate kicks, and more natural to move through the water using them together. It just seems to make more sense.
So it shouldn't feel so strange to just have something to help that along further. The only difference is the strengthening the fin will give me as I practice with it, and I can concentrate on my form and movement.
I'm prepared for the sore muscles at first, and some minor lower back pain. Those muscles will be put to different uses than what my current routine gives them, and I'll be happy for the exercise. Plus, this will help me shed any excess weight I've been wanting off *before* I invest in, and take measurements for, that custom made silicone tail.
XOXO

Name Search Update; A Possible Green Light

So, earlier I'd posted that I was waiting to hear back about the use of a name already used by a fellow mermaid.
It's a different spelling, and while I have not been able to contact her personally, the 'head mermaid' in her group has assured me that it's ok to use the name. She apparently is an occasional cosplayer/model for a tail-maker, and uses the name when she models for them.

Taking The Plunge

A 1933 issue of life magazine

Ever since I saw the movie Splash, the obsession with the sea, its amazing creatures and those mythical goddesses has never faded. My very first mermaid tail was made for me by mom when I was 6 or 7, right after I saw the movie Splash. We literally left the theater and went straight to the fabric store. The last tail I had was at about age 10, and neither of these were made for the water.
I had always planned on making one I could swim in, but life gets in the way as it so often does.
After many years, I'm finally embarking on the adventure of becoming a mermaid.
Below is a quote and a link from an an amazing article on today's growing number of mermaids, and the history behind it all:
thenewinquiry.com - "Neither Fish Nor Flesh"

"...all these mermaids reappearing may signal a shift not only for women but for gender roles generally. Slipping on a tail, and the mythic identity that comes with it, is sacred, powerful. It evokes the freedom of being beyond gender, for a moment, while at the same time tapping into a primal female power so rarely expressed. The undercurrent of the mermaid’s power, suppressed by Disney and other cultural forces, is returning, in all its ferocious, primal energy of transformation."

Currently residing in California for about 6 years, I grew up in Seattle near the water and spent a lot of time in and around the ocean. I have a connection with the sea that is unwavering, and was almost born on a sailboat while my mother was at the wheel. I had learned how to swim before I could walk, and while I don't get to swim as much as I'd like these days, I find myself yearning for the waves. Even a calm lake, a slow river... a cool blue swimming pool even makes me want to jump in.

This blog will document my journey and challenges of making a basic swimmable tail, strengthening, breath practice and exercise to be a strong swimmer again. Hair/skin/eye health will also be documented when swimming regularly, and my findings on how to combat any adverse effects of swimming with my eyes open underwater. Out of all this, the eyes will probably be my biggest challenge. I can always start off in goggles.
Last but not least, I will eventually acquire a more realistic silicone tail made by renowned tail-makers; Finfolk Productions. My goal for that is Spring of 2015.

What exactly will I do with my dream fins and this journey?
I plan to start this as a hobby, hitting conventions, swim gatherings and other gatherings of fellow mermaids. But I'd also like to do event entertainment & appearances and build a name for myself in the mermaid world. I'd love to participate in things such as festivals, side shows, modeling and representing the growing mermaid effort to help conserve ocean wildlife and habitat. Even the occasional children's party or event. My options are only as limited as I choose them to be.
